Quarter One: The starting
quarterbacks were Tom Brady for the Patriots and Kurt Warner for the St. Louis
Rams. The Rams would win the coin
toss and receive the ball first.
Kurt Warner would find Tori Holt for 18 yards to get to the New England 43 yard
line. The drive would stall on an
Ernie Conwell holding penalty that would result in a loss of -10 yards and the
Rams would be forced to punt on their opening possession.
The Patriots would start their first possession on their own 3 yard line.
Brady would find Troy Brown for a gain of 19 yards to get out to the 22
yard line. Antoine Smith would then
rush for 9 yards getting out to the 34 yard line.
Tom Brady would again find Troy Brown for a 9 yard gain to get out to the
43. The Patriots would have to punt
on their first possession, but they did manage to get out of the early hole they
were in. Later, Kurt Warner would
find Tori Holt for an 8 yard gain to get to the 28 yard line.
Warner would then find Isaac Bruce for a gain of 3 yards pushing out to
the Ram 33 yard line. A holding
penalty on Terrell Buckley would result in a 10 yard gain for the Rams and they
would get to the 47 yard line. Kurt
Warner would then hit Marshal Faulk with a pass resulting in a gain of 14 yards
landing the Rams on the Patriots 41 yard line.
Warner would then find James Hodgins for a gain of 7 yards and the Rams
would get to the New England 34 yard line.
Jeff Wilkins would cap off the 10 play 48 yard 5:05 drive by kicking a 50
yard field goal and the score would be (3-0) Rams.
Antoine Smith would rush for a 5 yard gain getting to the 24 yard line.
Later, Marshal Faulk would rush for a gain of 6 yards getting to the 24
yard line. Faulk would rush for
another 6 yards and would get the first down.
However on the next play, Kurt Warner would be sacked by Bobby Hamilton
causing a loss of -5 on the play as the quarter came to a close.
Quarter Two: The drive
would continue as Kurt Warner would find Oz Hakim for a gain of 28 yards and the
Rams would get down to the New England 39 yard line.
Kurt Warner would then add 5 yards more as he would run to the Patriots
34 yard line. The drive would end as
Jeff Wilkins field goal attempt would fall short of the goal posts and the
Patriots would get the ball on their own 42 yard line.
Antoine Smith would rush for 6 yards to get to the 48 yard line.
The drive would continue as a holding penalty on Herring would push the
Patriots down to the St. Louis 45 yard line.
But a holding penalty on Mike Compton for a loss of -10 yards would push
the Patriots back to their own 44 yard line.
Antoine Smith would rush for 5 yards to get to the 49 yard line.
But the Patriots would have to punt.
Later, Marshal Faulk would rush for a gain of 5 yards to get to the 24
yard line. He would then break a
tackle and gain 15 yards on a rush to get to the 39 yard line.
Kurt Warner’s drive would end as he would be intercepted by Patriots
Corner Ty Law who would run it back 49 yards into the end zone for the touch
down and with Adam Vinatieri’s extra point the score was now (7-3) New England.
Later, Kurt Warner would fumble the snap but still recover and have time
to find Tori Holt for a gain of 10 yards.
Warner would then find Oz Hakim for a gain of 10 yards to get out to the
50 yard line. Later, Antoine Smith
would gain 11 yards to get to the 26 yard line.
Tom Brady would then find Marc Edwards for a gain of 5 yards to get to
the 31 yard line. Antoine Smith
would rush 5 yards but the ball would be marked just short of the first down.
But Marc Edwards would come in and pick up the inches needed to get the
first down and keep the drive alive.
The drive would end as Tom Brady would be sacked by Leonard Little causing a
loss of -4 yards on the play and the Patriots would be forced to punt.
Later, Kurt Warner would find Oz Hakim for a gain of 5 yards to get to
the 20 yard line. Later in the
drive, Ricky Prohel would have the ball knocked loose and it would be recovered
by Terrell Buckley and the Patriots would get the ball on the St. Louis 40 yard
line. Tom Brady would then find Troy
Brown for a gain of 16 yards to get to the St. Louis 24 yard line.
Brady would then find tight end Germaine Wiggins for a gain of 8 yards
and the Patriots would get to the St. Louis 16 yard line.
Kevin Faulk would then run 8 yards to push the offense down to the Rams 8
yard line. Tom Brady would cap off
the 40 yard drive by finding David Patten on the corner of the end zone for the
touch down and with Adam Vinatieri’s extra point the score was now (14-3) New
England. On the following kick off,
returner Marshal Faulk would step out of bounds at the 6 yard line.
With :31 left in the half, Kurt Warner would take a knee to run out the
clock and end the half.
Quarter Three:
The Patriots would get the ball to open the half.
Antoine Smith would run for a gain of 8 yards to get to the 40 yard line.
Antoine Smith would then rush for a gain of 10 yards to get the ball down
to the St. Louis 47 yard line. Tom
Brady would then find Troy Brown with a pass play completion resulting in a gain
of 7 yards. The Patriots would
ultimately have to punt on their opening possession.
Later, a holding penalty by Ernie Conwell on the punt would push the Rams
back to their own 8 yard line. Kurt
Warner would get them out to the 26 yard line as he would find Oz Hakim with a
pass completion of 18 yards. Warner
would then find Isaac Bruce for a gain of 24 yards to get to the 48 yard line.
Otis Smith would keep the Ram drive alive by being flagged for pass
interference giving the Rams another first down.
But the Rams drive would end as Kurt Warner would be sacked by Richard
Seymour and Mike Vrabel causing a loss of -7 on the play and the Rams would also
have to punt on their opening possession.
Later, Antoine Smith would rush for 10 yards and a first down.
Tom Brady would then find David Patten for 9 yards as the Patriots would
get to the Rams 42 yard line.
Antoine Smith would rush for 5 yards to get to the Rams 37 yard line.
But the Patriots would eventually have to punt.
Later, Marshal Faulk would rush for gains of 12, 6 and 12 yards to get
the Rams high powered offense out to the 50 yard line.
Kurt Warner then would find Tori Holt for 5 yards to land on the New
England 45 yard line. The drive
would end as Kurt Warner would be intercepted by Otis Smith who would run the
ball back and the Patriots would get the ball on the St. Louis 33 yard line.
Tom Brady would find Troy Brown for a gain of 10 yards to get to the Rams
23 yard line. Later, a direct snap
to Kevin Faulk would see him rush for a gain of 6 yards to get to the Rams 20
yard line. Adam Vinatieri would cap
off the drive by kicking a 37 yard field goal making the score (17-3) New
England. Later, Kurt Warner would
find Isaac Bruce for a gain of 15 yards to get to the 38 yard line.
Warner would then find Marshal Faulk for a gain of 7 yards to get to the
45 yard line as the quarter came to a close.
Quarter Four:
Kurt Warner would find Oz Hakim for a gain of 9 yards to get to the
Patriots 46 yard line. A pass by
Warner to Hodgins for 13 yards would find the Rams on the Patriots 31 yard line.
A perfect Pass to Marshal Faulk by Kurt Warner would result in a play
resulting in a gain of 22 yards and land the Rams on the New England 9 yard
line. Warner would then find Jeff
Robinson for a gain of 6 yards landing the Rams on the Patriots 3 yard line.
Kurt Warner would then loose the ball and it would be recovered by
Tebucky Jones who would run it back 97 yards into the end zone for the score.
The play however would not count as Willie McGinnest would be flagged for
holding Marshal Faulk and the Rams would get a fresh set of downs on the
Patriots 2 yard line. Kurt Warner
would cap off the drive by rushing 2 yards into the end zone for the touch down
and with Jeff Wilkins extra point the score was now (17-10) New England.
Later, Antoine Smith would rush for a gain of 6 yards.
The gain was not enough and the Patriots would go three and out and be
forced to punt. The Rams would get
the ball back on their own 7 yard line.
Kurt Warner would start by hitting Tori Holt for a gain of 7 yards to get
to the 14 yard line. Another pass
completion by Warner, this time to Isaac Bruce for a gain of 4 yards pushed them
out to the 18 yard line. Kurt Warner
would then find Ricky Proehl for a gain of 30 yards to get to the 48 yard line.
Warner then found Jeff Robinson for a gain of 9 yards to get to the New
England 39 yard line. Kurt Warner
would then be sacked by Patriots line backer Willie McGinnest causing a loss of
-15 on the play.
Facing a 4th & 20 situation, the Rams were forced to punt.
Tom Brady would find Antoine Smith for a gain of 4 yards to get out to
the 22 yard line, but the Patriots would go three and out and be forced to punt
the ball. A combination of a penalty
and a bad punt would give the Rams the ball on their own 45 yard line.
Kurt Warner would then find Oz Hakim for a gain of 18 yards to get to the
New England 37 yard line. Warner
then would find Yo Murphy for a gain of 11 yards to get to the Patriots 26 yard
line. Kurt Warner would cap off the
55 yard drive by throwing a 26 yard touch down pass to Ricky Proehl and with
Jeff Wilkins extra point the game would be tied at (17-17).
With 1:21 left on the game clock and with no time outs left the Patriots
would get the ball on their own 17 yard line.
Tom Brady would find J. R. Redman for a gain of 4 yards to get to the 21
yard line. Brady would find Redman
again, this time for a gain of 3 yards to get to the 24 yard line.
Brady would find J. R. Redman again for a gain of 17 yards and the
Patriots would get to the 41 yard line.
Tom Brady would find Troy Brown for a gain of 5 yards to get to the St.
Louis 36 yard line. Tom Brady would
spike the ball with :07 left in regulation to stop the clock.
Adam Vinatieri would cap off the drive and the game by kicking a 48 yard
field goal as time expired making the score (20-17) New England giving the
Patriots their first ever world title in one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl
history.
