Quarter One:
The starting quarterbacks were Tom Brady for the Patriots and Jake Delhomme for
the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers
would win the coin toss and receive the ball first.
On the first play of Super Bowl XXXVIII it would be Panther Running Back
Stephen Davis rushing for a gain of 1 yard.
Stephen Davis would rush for 5 more yards but the Panthers would
ultimately have to punt on their opening possession.
On the kickoff, Troy Brown would run the ball back 28 yards to get to the
Panther 47 yard line. On the
Patriots first play of Super Bowl XXXVIII Tom Brady would find Deon Branch for a
gain of 16 yards to get to the Carolina 31 yard line.
Kevin Faulk would then rush for a 5 yard gain to get to the Panther 26
yard line. Tom Brady would then find
Troy Brown with a pass play completion of 13 yards to get to the Panther 14 yard
line. A Tom Brady False Start
Penalty would back the Patriots up -5 yards to the Carolina 19 yard line.
Adam Vinatieri would cap off the drive by missing a 36 yard field goal
wide right and the Panthers would get the ball on their own 31 yard line.
The next Panther drive would end after Jake Delhomme would be sacked by
Mike Vrabel causing a loss of -8 yards on the play forcing Carolina to punt.
Later, Tom Brady would find Deon Branch for a gain of 6 yards but the
Patriots would also have to punt on their second possession.
Later, Antowain Smith would rush for a gain of 7 yards to get to the
Panther 42 yard line. A Tom Brady
quick out to Deon Branch would result in a gain of 9 yards and a first down on
the Panther 33 yard line. After a
loss of yardage on an end around to Troy Brown, Tom Brady would find Deon Branch
for a gain of 6 yards to get to the 32.
Then Antowain Smith would rush for a gain of 9 yards to get to the
Panther 23.
Quarter Two:
The Patriots would be on the Panther 23 yard line but penalties would force the
Patriots back out of field goal range and they would be forced to punt.
On the next Panther possession, the drive would end as Jake Delhomme
would be sacked by Willie McGinest causing a loss of -10 yards on the play
forcing the Panthers to punt. Later,
Antowain Smith would rush for a gain of 6 yards to get to the 44 yard line.
Kevin Faulk would then rush 9 yards to get to the Carolina 47 yard line.
Tom Brady would then find Troy Brown for a gain of 10 yards but the ball
would be placed just inches short of the first down.
Later, facing a 4th and inches situation, the Patriots would
bring in Mike Vrabel and Richard Seymour for the play.
The Patriots would convert as Antowain Smith would just get enough to get
the first down. Tom Brady then found
tight end Daniel Graham for a gain of 3 yards to get to the Panthers 34 yard
line. Antowain Smith would later
rush for 9 yards to get down to the Carolina 20 yard line.
The drive would end as Adam Vinatieri would miss another field goal.
This one from 36 yards out and it would be blocked by the Panther special
team’s squad. The next Carolina
possession would end deep in their own
territory as Jake Delhomme would be sacked by Mike Vrabel and loose the ball.
It would be recovered by Richard Seymour and the Patriots would get the
ball on Carolina’s 20 yard line. Tom
Brady would rush himself for a gain of 12 yards to get to the Panther 5 yard
line. Tom Brady would cap off the 20
yard drive by finding Deon Branch in the end zone from 5 yards out for the touch
down and with Adam Vinatieri’s extra point the score was (7-0) New England.
The Panthers would be starting deep in their own territory at the 5 yard
line. Running back Stephen Davis
would rush for a gain of 5 yards to get out to the 10 yard line.
Jake Delhomme would then find Ricky Proehl for a gain of 13 yards getting
out to the 23 yard line. Jake
Delhomme would then find Muhammad for a gain of 23 yards getting out to the 45
yard line. Jake Delhomme then found
Ricky Proehl for a gain of 17 yards to get to the Patriots 38 yard line.
Jake Delhomme would cap off the 8 play 95 yard 1:58 drive by hitting
Steve Smith with a 38 yard touch down pass and with John Kasay’s extra point the
score was now tied at (7-7). On
their own 22 yard line, Tom Brady would find David Givens for a gain of 12 yards
getting out to the 34 yard line. Tom
Brady would then unload a bomb to Deon Branch that would result in a pass play
completion of 52 yards and would land the Patriots offense on the Panthers 14
yard line. Tom Brady would then find
David Givens for a gain of 9 yards to get to the Carolina 5 yard line.
Tom Brady would cap off the 6 play 78 yard :49 drive by finding David
Givens in the end zone from 5 yards out for the touch down and with Adam
Vinatieri’s extra point the score was now (14-7) New England.
A squib kick would give the Panthers excellent field position.
Stephen Davis would run for a gain of 21 yards and get to the Patriots 32
yard line. John Kasay would cap off
the drive by kicking a 50 yard field goal making the score (14-10) as time
expired ending the first half.
Quarter Three:
The Patriots would get the ball to open the half.
Tom Brady would find Kevin Faulk for a gain of 5 yards but it would not
be enough and the Patriots would have to punt on their opening possession.
Jake Delhomme would find former Patriot Jermaine Wiggins for a gain of 16
yards getting to the Patriots 46 yard line.
Jake Delhomme would find Jermaine Wiggings again, this time for a gain of
6 yards to get to the New England 40 yard line.
Later, Tom Brady would find Troy Brown for a gain of 5 yards to get out
to the 15 yard line. Tom Brady then
found Kevin Faulk for a gain of 7 yards to get to the 22 yard line.
The Patriots would be forced to punt eventually.
Later, Stephan Davis would rush for a gain of 5 yards to get to the 16
yard line getting out of a hole. The
drive would end as Jake Delhomme would be sacked by Rodney Harrison forcing the
Panthers to punt. Later, Tom Brady
would find Deon Branch for a gain of 15 yards to get to the 44 yard line.
Antowain Smith would then rush for a gain of 5 yards to get to the 45 of
the Panthers. Antowain Smith would
rush for 5 more yards to get to the Carolina 40 yard line.
Tom Brady would hook up with Deon Branch for a gain of 8 yards getting to
the Carolina 32 yard line. A holding
penalty on Patriots guard Joe Andruzzi would push the Patriots back -10 yards to
the Carolina 42 yard line. Tom Brady
would later find tight end Daniel Graham for a gain of 33 yards to get to the
Panthers 9 yard line. Antowain Smith
would then rush for 4 yards to get to the Carolina 5 yard line as the quarter
came to a close.
Quarter Four:
A holding on Greg Favors would bring the Patriots to the Panther 2 yard line.
Antowain Smith would cap off the 8 play 71 yard 4:04 drive by running
into the end zone for the touch down from 2 yards out.
Adam Vinatieri’s extra point made the score (21-10) Patriots.
Later, Jake Delhomme would find Mohammad for a gain of 13 yards getting
to the 31 yard line. Delhomme would
then find Steve Smith for a 20 yard gain getting to the 45 yard line.
Jake Delhomme would then find Steve Smith for 22 more yards and the
Panther offense would get down to the Patriots 37 yard line.
It would be DeShawn Foster capping off the drive as he would break a
tackle and rush 32 yards into the end zone for the touch down.
The Panthers would line up and go for a 2 point conversion but would be
unsuccessful making the score (21-16) Patriots.
Later, Tom Brady would find Deon Branch for a gain of 19 yards getting to
the 41 yard line. Tom Brady then
found Troy Brown for a gain of 11 yards getting to the Panthers 48 yard line.
Antowain Smith would then rush for a gain of 7 yards to get to the
Carolina 41 yard line. Tom Brady
then found Daniel Graham for a gain of 6 yards to get to the Carolina 33 yard
line. Kevin Faulk would then break a
tackle and rush for a gain of 23 yards to get down to the Carolina 10 yard line.
The Drive would end in the end zone as Tom Brady would be intercepted by
Reggie Howard who would run it back to the 10 yard line.
Jake Delhomme would then find Ricky Proehl for a gain of 5 yards to get
out to the 15 yard line. Jake
Delhomme would then cap off the 3 play 90 yard :45 drive by hitting Muhammad
with an 85 yard touch down bomb. The
Panthers would line up and go for the 2 point conversion again and would be
unsuccessful again making the score (22-21) Carolina.
Later, Tom Brady would find Kevin Faulk for a gain of 5 yards to get to
the 43 yard line. Tom Brady then
found Troy Brown for 7 yards to get to the 50 yard line.
Tom Brady then found David Givens for a gain of 24 yards to get down to
the Carolina 23 yard line. Brady
would later hit David Givens again for a nice gain, this time for 19 yards to
get to the Carolina 3 yard line. Tom
Brady would cap off the 11 play 68 yard 4:02 drive by finding Mike Vrabel in the
end zone for the touch down from 3 yards out.
This time it would be the Patriots lining up for a 2 point conversion and
they would get it on a direct snap to Kevin Faulk who would run the ball in from
2 yards out making the score (29-21) New England.
Later, DeShawn Foster would rush for a gain of 9 yards to get out to the
28 yard line. Foster would rush for
another 10 yards after that. Later,
Jake Delhomme would find Muhammad for a gain of 19 yards to get to the 45 yard
line of New England. Jake Delhomme
would then find Ricky Proehl for a gain of 30 yards pushing down to the Patriot
15 yard line. Jake Delhomme would
cap off the 7 play 80 yard 1:43 drive by throwing a touch down pass to Ricky
Proehl from 12 yards out and with John Kasay’s extra point the score was now
tied at (29-29). The following kick
off was a bad one from John Kasay and would go out of bounds giving the Patriots
the ball on their own 40 yard line.
Tom Brady would find Troy Brown with a gain of 13 yards to get to the Carolina
48 yard line. Tom Brady would later
find Troy Brown for a gain of 13 yards to get to the 45 yard line of Carolina.
Tom Brady then hit Daniel Graham with a pass play completion resulting in
a gain of 5 yards to get to the Carolina 40 yard line.
Tom Brady then would find Deon Branch for a gain of 19 yards to get down
to the Carolina 21 yard line. With
:09 left in the game, Adam Vinatieri would cap off the drive by kicking a 41
yard field goal making the score (32-29) Patriots.
The Patriots would kick the ball off with :04 left on the clock but the
coverage was good and the time would expire preserving the Patriots (32-29)
victory and their second world championship in three years.
